The Aldi Community Games National Athletics and Cycling on Grass Finals took place in IT Carlow Sport’s Campus on Saturday 25th September

400 children from around Ireland took part in the National Athletics and Cycling on Grass Finals in IT Carlow Sport’s Campus on Saturday 25th September with special guests; Olympian Marcus Lawler and European Medallists Molly Scott and Sarah Quinn cheering them on!

Hosted by IT Carlow and supported by Carlow County Council, 42 Athletics and Cycling Events took place in pods throughout the day to ensure that the safety of the participants, volunteers and families was the main priority.

The event was live-streamed on YouTube for friends and family back at home and Aunties and Uncles tuned in all the way from Sydney and New York.  The live-feed can be replayed as often as people like to relive those special moments – from personal bests to first time Finals for some!

MC’s Anthony Fitzsimons and Kildare FM’s Killian Whelan along with guest commentators Marcus Lawler, Molly Scott and Sarah Quinn ensured that every child had a voice and whether they won, lost or drew they were all made feel like number 1.

John Curtin, Group Buying Director at Aldi Ireland, said; “We are delighted that Aldi Community Games were able to continue this year, despite the challenges that sporting events all around the world have faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. The team at Community Games really rose to the challenges that they faced when arranging the games this year - allowing young people the opportunity to continue participating in sports and art all around the country in their local communities. We all know how important a strong sense of community is, and Community Games allows for this to continue, even in the most challenging of times.”

Eleanor Farrell, Chief Commercial Officer of Bus Éireann commented; “Bus Éireann and Aldi Community Games are at the heart of communities across Ireland and we are proud to be the official travel partner of the Games for the second year. The National Track and Field Athletics Finals highlight the incredible talents of participants from across Ireland and we are delighted to be part of such an exciting event.”

Fintan Phelan, Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council commented; “It is great to have the Aldi Community Games National Athletics Finals in Carlow in the top class facilities of IT Carlow. Community Games has a rich history in this county and to this day thousands of Children participate annually. I have fond memories of Community Games and participating in the National Finals in Mosney.”

Gerry McGuinness, President of Aldi Community Games said; “Over the last few weeks at our Regional Athletics Finals we’ve been thrilled to see lots of smiling faces from both the young and young at heart!  Volunteers and staff have worked long and hard to put everything in place to be able to provide these events in a safe manner, and it’s been fantastic that we get to see everyone again after over a year.  We’re grateful to our title sponsors Aldi Ireland and our Official Travel Partners Bus Éireann and Transport for Ireland for helping us bring back the Games to Communities all over Ireland!  A very special thanks also to Sport Ireland (our main funder) and Carlow County Council for their support in the hosting of this event.  But most importantly thanks to the very resilient children for taking part! Win, lose or draw – every child here is a champion!”

Jane Walsh, PR & Marketing Director Aldi Community Games said; “It's great to be back! We've all missed the friends, fun and events we have in Aldi Community Games and are looking forward to more physical and virtual events later this year and coming back bigger and better in 2022!”
