Notes
Additional Notes
This is a Provincial event. Your team first qualifies at County level before progressing to Provincial.
- Misconduct: Persistent fouling – The referee will have serious regard for personal fouls, such as pulling an opponent, vulgar or abusive language, etc. After a warning, a player will be sent off the field for the next such offence. A player who is sent off shall not be allowed to take any further part in that game or in the following game that their team participates in.
- The game will be played according to the Community Games Rules and will be of 4 innings duration. The ball to be used will be a “Tennis Ball”.
- Each team will number their players in boy/girl (or girl/boy) sequence from 1 to 12.
- The referee will toss to decide which team will throw and which will field.
- The team manager will provide a list of their players (1–12) to the referee prior to the start of the game. No listed player can be omitted from the throwing order except in the case of sickness or injury.
- A team can commence with a minimum of 3 boys and 3 girls.
- Four substitutions may be made during the game (boy for boy, girl for girl). Substitutions can be made at any time, up to a maximum of 4, with the referee's permission.
- The playing area will be 40m square with a “Foul” area of 10m x 40m to the right and left of Home Base. The “Foul” line will run at a 90° angle from Home Base to the edge of the playing area. The base areas will be painted on the ground.
- Spectators and team management (and substitutes) must stay outside of the Play and Foul areas.
- Members of the throwing team must remain outside the throwing area until called by the referee.
- 60cm x 60cm non-slip mats (e.g., carpet material) will be placed at each base. Base 1 will be 15m from Home Base, at a right angle along the Foul Line. Base 2 will be 15m from Base 1 at a right angle. Base 3 will be 15m from Base 2, also at a right angle, and 15m from Home Base. The bases form a 15m square.
- Running shoes or football boots may be worn. Spiked footwear is not allowed.
- The game will commence when the referee calls “Play Ball”.
- Each thrower may take three throws before being required to leave Home Base. Throwers must throw from a standing position, with their leading foot in contact with (and not in front of) Home Base at the moment of release. The ball must be thrown forward toward the field of play.
- The ball must enter the field of play before touching Foul ground or be properly fielded to be in play.
- A Foul Ball is a Dead Ball: no runners may advance, the thrower may not run, no outs or runs can occur. Runners must remain on base unless it is the third good throw or a catch occurs. Runners may not leave base until the ball is in play.
- The Fielding team may change positions at any time.
- If a thrower’s ball touches Foul Ground first, they are not entitled to leave Home Base. A sideways-thrown ball landing in Foul Ground is a foul. On the third good ball, the thrower will be declared out.
- Fielders, other than the Home Base minder, may not stand in the Foul Ground area when the ball is thrown.
NB: Only the Home Base minder may legally stand in Foul Ground and catch the ball at all times. - If a thrower leaves Home Base on the first or second throw and takes more than 4 paces, they must continue to 1st base. They may not return. When a thrower leaves Home Base, each runner may advance to the next base.
- A thrower is deemed to have left Home Base if they break contact with the base by any part of the body. If they leave on the first or second throw and take fewer than 5 paces, they may return and be entitled to throw again.
- One run is scored each time a runner completes a full circuit of all bases and returns to Home Base. No runs may be scored while the Thrower remains at Home Base.
- A thrower is “out” if:
- The ball is caught directly by a fielder.
- They are touched by a fielder holding the ball.
- The base they are running to is tagged while they are touched by the fielder with the ball.
- They have fouled the ball.
- The ball may not be thrown at a runner by a fielder.
- Runners must run in straight lines between bases and may not deviate. Runners may avoid contact by sliding under or jumping over a fielder. If contact occurs—accidental or not—the runner is out. Fielders should aim to tag runners with a hand or light touch. Runners cannot claim obstruction.
- Base play must be decisive. In split decisions, referees/umpires must assume the fielder was not fast enough, and the runner is declared safe.
- A team is out when 3 throwers are declared out. No further scoring may occur. The ball must be returned to Home Base to tag the base and end the play. Teams then reverse roles. If thrower #4 is last out, thrower #5 will begin the next innings as the first thrower.
- The team with the most runs after 4 innings wins. If tied:
- The team that won 3 of the 4 innings is the winner. If still tied:
- An extra inning is played. The referee tosses to decide who goes first. The inning starts with thrower #1. Substitutions are allowed as it is deemed a new game.
